The Daumier Register Digital Work Catalogue

DR NR	Stands for DAUMIER REGISTER, the digital work catalogue you are looking at. It is the most recent work catalogue of Daumier's oeuvre and is constantly being updated. The DR-number refers to the number in the DAUMIER REGISTER. Drawings are numbered between DR10001 and DR12500.

TECHNIQUE	There are several techniques and media for DRAWINGS: Drawing on paper Drawing on lithographic stone Drawing on woodblock Drawing (after Daumier) Drawing (unconfirmed)
TITLES	Most of Daumier's drawings carry more than one title. In this section we are listing all the titles of each drawings including the ones in a foreign language.
SIGNATURE	Daumier's drawings are either unsigned or signed with "h.Daumier" or with the monogram "h.D.".
THEMES	When looking at a drawing, a number of themes become apparent either from the illustration itself (e.g. lawyers, flowers, horse, portrait) or from the meaning expressed in the illustration (e.g. poverty, city life, joy).
YEAR	Very often the date of creation of a drawing by Daumier is difficult to establish. Different experts have different opinions. In this section we list all the dates of each drawing given by various work catalogues.
REFERENCE	This is a bibliography for each drawing showing all the reference books (and page number) dealing with the drawing.
SIMILARITIES	Many themes and scenes in Daumier's drawing can be seen in reference to his entire oeuvre. We are listing for each drawing similar or comparable drawings, lithographs, paintings or wood engravings. By clicking on the "Similarity"-links the similar work can be opened and compared to the drawing in question.
SIZE	Various work catalogues, exhibition or auction catalogues state different sizes for Daumier's drawings. This is a list of all the sizes of each drawing with exact reference to the literature.
EXHIBITIONS	A list of all exhibitions where a drawing has been shown, with date and number in the exhibition catalogues.
COLLECTIONS	This section gives the provenance of each Daumier drawing with dates (where available) and often with sales prices or other relevant information. Collections marked as "Private Collection, nr...." may be contacted through us. All information contained in this section has been supplied by the owners, published by Museums or researched in the literature. The DAUMIER REGISTER cannot be held accountable for any mistakes.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION	This section provides multi-level information for each drawing: a) Description of the drawing b) Opinions of experts c) Quotes from newspaper articles and other documents regarding the drawing d) Cultural and historic information about the subject or the specific drawing. General historic background of the period. e) Short abstracts about themes (e.g. about Lawyers, Washerwomen etc.) New information will permanently be added and updated.
PHOTOGRAPHS	Each search result shows one or more photographs of a drawing.
