En ce temps là, un grand et gros pècheur nommé Véron se sentit touché de la grâce: ayant réfléchi que la Presse était un sacerdoce, il se fit ermite et se retira dans un lieu sauvage au milieu des montagnes les plus escarpées de Montmartre. Là, il passait ses jours et ses nuits en prières, et par manière de mortification, il s'était imposé la pénitence de relire continuellement le registre des abonnés du Constitutionnel. - Pour unique nourriture, Véron prenait de loin en loin un léger fragment de pâte de Regnauld. - Le Diable irrité de cette conversion édifiante mais inattendue, employa différens sortilèges pour faire succomber St. Véron à ses tentations, mais notre pieux cénobite sut résister à tout ce qui avait naguère tant de charmes pour lui: aussi Satan qui avait pris la forme du Constitutionnel pour venir en personne tenter St. Véron, reprit-il furieux le chemin de Paris. - L'anachorète de Montmartre est placé depuis ce temps au rang des plus grands saints dont s'honore le journalisme Parisien, et il est spécialement imploré par les malheureux enrhumés du cerveau.
