Original Text: FUMEURS ET PRISEURS.
Translation: SMOKERS AND SNUFFERS.
One must not believe that all Chinese who smoke opium become idiots. There is a great number of men, mainly from the better classes of society, who are constantly smoking or snuffing a certain leaf, which looks disagreeable enough but also smells in quite a repelling way. Since this leaf grows on a plant called nicotine, it is only natural to call it tobacco.
