Les législateurs chinois, eminemment philantropes, ont montré la plus touchante sollicitude pour le gibier en général, et ils ont été touchés des malheurs de la bécasse en particulier, comme si ça les regardait personnellement. LE CODE PÉNAL.
Les législateurs Chinois ont decreté que tous les accusés comparaîtraient librement devant leurs juges, aussi ne les conduit-on devant le magistrat instructeur qu'entre deux gendarmes et garrottés de menottes, ce qui en fait de liberté ne leur laisse guère que celle d'éternuer. De plus la justice se rend avec tant de promptitude dans le céleste empire qu'il est bien rare qu'un prévenu reste plus de huit mois à attendre son jugement, enfin arrive le jour solennel où il se voit condamner à quinze jours de prison, et le mandarin toqué a la bonté de lui expliquer que ces quinze jours ne se confondent pas avec les huit mois qu'il a déjà passé sous les verroux.

AN INTOLERABLE CRIME.
The Chinese legislative consists of eminent philanthropists. They show a touching solicitude with the suffering of the game in general and with the wood-cock in specific, almost as if it concerns them personally. Consequently any Chinese who kills a sparrow, even in the case of legitimate defence, will immediately be charged and sentenced to the most severe penalty, unless he can prove beyond reasonable doubt that he had the permission of the communal mandarin, the owner of the land, the chief of police and of the sparrow himself.

The penal code.
The Chinese legislation has passed a law which allows the defendant to appear as a free man in front of the Court, which means that he will never be accompanied by more than two policemen and in handcuffs. Thus his freedom consists of being able to sneeze. Furthermore the legal system in the Celestial Empire guarantees that most cases are being judged within a period of no more than 8 months. On the day of judgement the defendant will be sentenced to 2 weeks, which as the mandarin in his benevolence explains, should not be mixed up with the 8 months already spent behind bars.
